Abstract

Johnson county is sixth county from the south in the eastern tier of counties on Missouri state line, and with the exception of a small part of Wyandotte county it is the first county south of Kansas river. The area is 473 square miles. Olathe, about 25 miles southwest of Kansas City, is the county seat. The topography falls into three divisions: (1) the gently undulating uplands, most distant from the larger streams, (2) the steep slopes along the larger streams, and (3) the.nearly smooth terraces and flood plains along the larger streams. The maximum local relief is about 275 feet while on the smoother uplands it is less than 100 feet. The bedrock comprises beds of shale, limestone, and sandstone which in general have a gentle westward dip.
