Abstract

From 1996 through 1998, we sampled fishes in the Solomon, Saline, and Arkansas rivers in central Kansas. We collected quantitative samples with seines or a backpack electrofishing unit. Specimens were preserved as museum vouchers deposited in the Sternberg Museum of Natural History (MHP) at Fort Hays State University or recorded in the field and released. Species of fishes collected in the counties through which these rivers flow are summarized on maps by Cross (1967) and Cross and Collins (1995). Eberle and others (1995) and Eberle, Wenke, and Welker (1997) reported additional county records. In the 1996-1998 surveys, we collected specimens of bullhead minnows (Pimephales vigilax) and emerald shiners (Notropis atherinoides) that represented range extensions for these species upstream from previous collection sites in the Solomon and Saline rivers within the Kansas River Basin. We also collected bullhead minnows for the first time in the Arkansas River in Barton and Rice counties.
