Abstract
Models of carbon, nitrogen and water flow, constructed for developing cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) fruits indicate that up to 70% of the water intake via xylem and phloem is in excess of the fruits’ requirement (tissue water, transpiration). Detailed anatomical observations of fruits together with diurnal water balance studies and translocation patterns of [3H]H2O, acid fuchsin and NO 3 − together support a hypothesis for a significant, diurnally — reversing xylem flow between the developing fruit and the parent plant.
