Abstract

Abstract Finite element technique is used to formulate the discretized form of mass balance equations representing BOD and DO dispersions in a river. The BOD and DO concentrations at the nodal points within the domain are considered as system variables. The linear programming is applied to determine the maximum allowable BOD loading which can be discharged into the specified elements in such a way that the BOD and DO concentrations at any pre‐identified node can be maintained within the desired values.
