Abstract
The problems of water pollution control in semi-arid and arid zones differ from those found in areas with heavier rainfall. Very low total rainfall or extended dry periods require the disposal of waste water without the usual possibilities of dilution. Conventional sewage treatment methods are not always applicable in such cases. Waste water utilization, whether by direct irrigation, industrial use, or ground water recharging, is suggested as a possible method of waste water disposal and utilization under arid zone conditions. Such solutions meet both the requirements of water pollution control and the needs for maximum water conservation and re-use. The engineering and public health aspects of waste water utilization are discussed and a detailed analysis of the waste water utilization programmes in Israel is presented.
