Abstract
1. 1. Water loss and metabolism were investigated in the spiders Argiope aurantia Lucas and Argiope trifasciata (Forskäl). 2. 2. Regression analysis revealed a significantly higher positive slope in the relationship between live mass and whole animal water loss in A. aurantia than in A. trifasciata. 3. 3. A positive relationship was found between live mass and mass-specific water loss rates in A. aurantia but not in A. trifasciata. 4. 4. Metabolic rates were significantly lower at 15° and 25°C in dehydrated than in normally hydrated A. trifasciata. In contrast, dehydrated A. aurantia had significantly higher rates at 25°C.
