Abstract

Objectives:This study investigates the integration of a hydro-cyclone decanter into Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) systems to enhance particle segregation during the decanting phase, aiming to improve removal efficiencies of suspended particles in SBR. Methods:A hydro-cyclone separator was designed for the SBR reactor, optimizing particles separation using centrifugal forces without extensive process modifications. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance with synthetic and actual wastewater at different concentrations and flow rates.Results and Discussion:The hydro-cyclone decanter achieved removal efficiencies of up to 32.3% for synthetic wastewater and approximately 73.2% for actual wastewater, demonstrating significant particle segregation capabilities. However, its impact on dissolved pollutants like total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) was limited.Conclusion:Integrating a hydro-cyclone decanter in SBR systems significantly enhances particle segregation, particularly for larger particles, while moderately improving COD removal, suggesting its effective use in wastewater treatment processes.
