Abstract
Automobile rear-end collisions and collisions at intersections are the two most common traffic accident types in Japan. Although a number of warning systems for avoiding rear-end collisions have been proposed, little attention has been paid to warning systems aimed at preventing non-signalized intersection collisions. This paper discusses an effective vehicle warning system that has the potential to prevent such collision and confirms its effectiveness by experiments using a driving simulator. The experimental results show that the proposed warning is effective and that optimal warning timings depend on the distance of the approaching vehicle to the intersection.
