Abstract

Building stones provide a variety of lithologies and examples of weathering that can be examined during an inexpensive and time-efficient urban field trip. Walking tours to examine building stones, preceded by a practical session and followed by independent student descriptions of natural stone, can be used in introductory geology courses with or without associated laboratories. Students learn rock and mineral identification and field methods used by geologists. Students are able to identify fossils seen only in two-dimensional sections more quickly by comparing two-dimensional sections with complete specimens.
