Probably the most interesting Russian psychologist of the Soviet period, Lev Semenovich Vygotskiĭ was the founder of the ‘cultural–historical school’ in Soviet psychology. He investigated the origins of language and thought as embedded into sociocultural context. His ideas were seminal for different branches of psychology, neurophysiology, linguistics, semiotics, and aesthetics.
