Voting, resilience, and inclusiveness in standardisation: a commentary on Bekkers & Lazaj’s and Stanojević’s implications for ETSI and beyond

Abstract

The European Commission’s Standardisation Strategy identifies issues with ETSI’s inclusiveness. In this commentary, I reflect on how the research by Bekkers & Lazaj on voting in ETSI and Stanojević on the organisation’s resilience strategies contributes to this debate. Taken together, these contributions suggest that the issue may not be as severe as the European Commission suggests, but that ETSI’s organisational response to the challenge may not be very effective. I also argue that these insights are relevant beyond ETSI to the broader discourse on standardisation, as well as future research on goal-directed networks in general. Both studies raise important questions related to decision-making and organisational responses to crises in these contexts.
