Abstract

It does indeed appear that certain matters pertinent to the social conditioning of both sexes have been too subtle for W M Fletcher's grasp (Physics Bulletin March 1 988 p90). As a woman in higher education, I am acutely aware that if it had not been for the 'whingeing sexual paranoia' which drove women before me to chain themselves to railings, throw eggs at their MPs and tolerate the isolation as well as the ridicule of being pioneers, then I might not today have the vote, nor indeed be in physics.
