Abstract

This article gives a brief description of vortex-induced vibrations of circular cylinders and cables in the marine environment. These vibrations can be the factor limiting operations of unmanned submersibles and offshore drilling or production systems. Possible methods of limiting or suppressing these vibrations are discussed in the light of laboratory tests, site investigations and literature surveys. It is not always possible to compare devices in similar ranges of Reynolds number or Structural Stability Parameter, but where possible this is done and the applicability of the devices is described.
