Abstract

Crystalline galactinol was obtained from an extract of leaves of Lamium maculatum (1·72 g/2 kg) after separation by a charcoal-celite column. The quantitative determination of galactinol and different oligosaccharides showed that galactinol occurs in the leaves in an amount similar to that of raffinose and stachyose. In the roots and rhizomes the amount of galactinol is decreased compared to the amount of the other oligosaccharides. Galactinol was found in all those plants which also contain raffinose and stachyose.
