Abstract

This article focuses on the promotion of Work-Life-Balance (WLB) in Japan and consequently begins by considering the characteristics of political support for fathers. The major objective of this study, however, is to identify an alternative solution to WLB problems which was initiated by fathers themselves. Therefore, two local father groups were selected in the second stage in order to consider fathers’ motivations for participating in child care. In the empirical part, the formation, motives, and goals of two clubs called Neripapa and Nishi Tōkyō-shi Papa Kurabu are presented. The data for this study were collected in the beginning of 2015 in Tokyo. The research results were categorized according to Max Weber’s determinants of social action and show different reasons for the formation of the two groups. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that Japanese fathers have other options for managing their WLB than drawing on political support measures. This study indicates that local father groups provide a promising individual solution for promoting WLB by offering mutual exchange and activities.
