Abstract
Abstract In the field of special education, educators and administrators have witnessed a growing demand for mandated services for the handicapped together with critical manpower shortages and severe financial cutbacks. To alleviate problems of staffing, budgeting and delivery of services, a plan for better utilization of assistant volunteers from all citizen groups in the community is offered. The significant role each volunteer group plays in the educational process of the handicapped is identified. Proposals for volunteers in meeting the needs of the special child are provided together with useful strategies for a success‐‐volunteer program. A viable relationship between the professional, classroom teacher and the assistant volunteer is highlighted.
