Abstract

This paper identifies the drivers for a gateway control protocol and provides a review of protocols proposed within the industry, culminating with the Megaco effort. The paper describes the Megaco architecture and associated protocol in detail and illustrates the extensibility features it provides. It concludes with the current open issues, time-scales for the standardisation of Megaco/H.248 and the interactions between the IETF and the ITU-T concerning the longer-term maintenance and development of the protocol.
