Abstract

On the drive into work tonight, I was in bumper-to-bumper traffic, moving along about 60 miles per hour. A few cars along the route during the 30-minute commute would come up and drive 10 feet behind me as I simply tried to maintain my speed in the flow of cars while maintaining a reasonable interval with the car in front of me. I could actually see the driver's face as he or she gestured and intimated their impatience and frustration with their need to get around me (so they could move 20 feet closer to their destination). I wondered what could be going through their mind (if anything) in that they absolutely had to tailgate and push to move forward in the traffic jam. Maybe they were late for an important date or simply were the kind of folks who were always pressuring themselves and others to get there in a big hurry.
