Abstract

The question of Christmas weather is always in the centre of media attention during December. However, pictures and paintings showing snow covered country and towns are not the prevailing reality, as we describe in our paper. On the other hand, when no snow cover occurs during Christmas days, most people talk about “Christmas thaw”. But we have found that most cases with snowless Christmas related to days without snow cover many days before Christmas, i.e., there had been no snow to thaw right before/during Christmas. Actually, thaw and its definition is another point we discuss here. Further, we focus on occurrence of “white” and “rainy” Christmas as well as on significant cooling during the festive days.
