Abstract

The publication is devoted to certain aspects of the preparation and conduct of the Russian-Swedish scientific expedition to the Spitsbergen (Svalbard) archipelago in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. It was prepared on the basis of documents from the State Archive of the Arkhangelsk region, some of which publish for the first time. It tells about the assistance of the Arkhangelsk provincial administration to the Commission for degree measurement on the islands of Spitsbergen of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. In 1899 warm clothes for the participants of expedition were made in a short time in Arkhangelsk; in 1899 and 1900 residents of the province - “reliable Pomors” - were hired to work in the extreme conditions of Spitsbergen (Svalbard); in 1902-1903, 24 residents of the province were awarded by commemorative badges.
