Abstract
The Italian neurologist and histologist Vittorio Marchi (1851–1908) studied at the University of Modena (Modena, Italy). In 1883, after completing a PhD in pharmacology and graduating in medicine, he moved to Pavia to start a fellowship under the supervision of Camillo Golgi, by then a professor at the University of Pavia. After the completion of a year's work, he stayed on as Golgi's assistant. In 1885, he moved to the University of Florence, where he became assistant to Luigi Luciani (1840–1919), another outstanding neuroscientist.
