Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) are the most common benign tumors in reproductive age women. African American women have more uterine fibroids burden as well as 10 times more hypovitaminosis D than white women. The Eker rats exhibit spontaneous uterine leiomyoma and serves as an excellent pre-clinical model to assess novel therapeutics for the treatment of uterine leiomyomas. Although Vitamin D is a strong growth inhibitor in leiomyoma cells, its anti-tumor effect on leiomyoma growth in Eker rats is unknown.
