Abstract

Among navigating ships a near-miss accident means an undesired event that did not result in collision, but had a potential to do so with high risk. The assessment of near miss accidents is required to take further proactive measure for re-duction of ship collision accident, while actual accident analysis helps finding any solution to prevent future maritime accidents. Using statistical data of encountering ships, the logistic regression was applied to assess risk level for near miss. The previous ap-proach did not provided proper index with respect to collision risk. In this paper, the concept of SCNI (Ship Collision Near-miss Index) was proposed to visualize collision risk. The SCNI represents gridded map by categorizing encounter types and help making any decision for collision avoidance. In consideration of a practical use, it should be noted that the SCNI was applied to assess quantitative risk on basis of ship trajectories collected for 4 months from navigating ships in coastal water area.
