Abstract

Children’s literature, unlike most other areas of literary studies, has a significant visual component, including in the form of illustrated books, picture books, picturebooks, artists’ books, comics and manga, graphic novels and other forms of strip stories. This dynamic area of research is evolving rapidly under the influence of the new technologies; indeed, graphic novels are currently one of the fastest-growing segments of publishing. In the case of some picturebooks, artists’ books, comics, and graphic novels, the narrative is entirely visual, which for students and scholars who are more familiar with word-based texts may initially pose problems, since working with visual materials involves different skills and strategies. This section is designed to provide basic guidance on working with visual texts, from locating and analysing material to reproducing images and obtaining permission to reproduce pictures in any publications that arise from your research.
