Abstract

Of course, it is not the history teacher's specific task to teach or train aesthetic judgement, any more than it is to teach reading. To turn to books with more directly historical content: Man the Artist is a finely produced discussion of all the arts. Histories of art include the unsurpassed classic by E. H. Gombrich, The Story of Art; this is for the 16-18 age-group, but its lucid style and illustrations enable some younger pupils to use it profitably. Price is obviously a great problem in specialist works of this kind and therefore particularly welcome is the Studio Vista Pictureback series, e.g. J. Barron, Greek Sculpture , A. Bertram, Michelangelo and Florentine Sculpture and G. M. Amaya, Art Nouveau. A series which is particularly valuable for the older and more academic pupils is the Penguin Style and Civilization e.g. M. Levey, Early Renaissance.
