Abstract
This chapter introduces the main historical trajectories and contemporary trends of visual arts education in museum settings across four cultural contexts (i.e., the UK, the USA, Mainland China, and Singapore). The review begins with an outline of museum education in the four contexts, identifying two waves of museum education in the two Western countries and the strong influence of the political and economic agendas on museum education in mainland China and Singapore. This is followed by a brief overview of visual arts education in museum settings, with particular attention to its connection with formal education in schools. This chapter considers the historical paths of museum education and presents a vision of museums that embraces humanistic values with regard to increasing the application of technology and growing the advocacy role of museums in promoting psychological wellbeing.
