The first issue appeared in December 2002 and covered the fields of Astronomy and Earth science. The second issue appeared in December 2003 and covered Mathematics, physics and engineering. This third issue covers Chemistry and life science. This triennial pattern will now be repeated, rolling cyclically through the physical sciences according to the scheme:(i) 2005 and 2008 to cover Astronomy and Earth science;(ii) 2006 and 2009 to cover Mathematics, physics and engineering;(iii) 2007 and 2010 to cover Chemistry and life science. It seems likely that a similar scheme will be started in the near future by the companion journal on the biological side, Philosophical Transactions of The Royal Society B. Following the successful pattern established by the three Millennium Issues of the journal, I am soliciting articles for this Triennial Series from leading young scientists, including holders of Royal Society (RS) Research Fellowships (University Research Fellows and Dorothy Hodgkin Fellows). For compatibility with these awards, ‘young’ is being interpreted as scientists with no more than about 12 years post–doctoral experience: all existing RS Research Fellows are deemed to be eligible. The three–year cycle will ensure that the majority of research fellows receive a relevant invitation: and this new series will act as a valuable forum for them. The three Millennium Issues appeared as vol. 357 (no. 1763) December 1999, vol. 358 (no. 1765) January 2000 and vol. 358 (no. 1766) January 2000 and can be accessed freely on http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk. They formed the basis of three popular paperback books published by Cambridge University Press (Thompson 2001a–c), which are currently being translated for Chinese editions. These collections gave a unique snapshot of the state of physical science at the turn of the millennium, of interest to researchers and the public at large. The excitement and enthusiasm of the young scientists was strongly conveyed. In a similar fashion, the present Triennial Series will form the basis of a series of books to be published by Imperial College Press under the general title Advances in science. The first of these is now in press (Thompson 2005).
