Abstract

The visible and near-infrared absorption spectra were observed for glass-forming compositions in the sodium-silicate-uranium system. Correlation of the observed spectra with the prevailing uranium ion indicated U(IV) was present when the glass had been formed under reducing conditions but not for oxidizing conditions. U(V) was indicated under both oxidizing and reducing conditions. U(VI) was found associated with the UO 2 ++ group and with high sodium contents.
