Abstract

Summary We propose a new concept suggesting that viruses may be responsible for certain diseases, but that the presence of the infectious agent is not required for the expression of the pathological syndrome. Results from our laboratory are presented concerning paramyxo- and myxovirus infections (measles, canine distemper and influenza viruses) and are compared with data cited for other diseases involving autoimmunity or malignant transformation.
