Abstract
Prediction of violent behavior, although fraught with ethical and practical concerns, is necessary in many aspects of life. It is an enterprise that requires balancing individual and societal rights. While those charged with predicting violent behavior are unable to do so with great accuracy, methods for predicting violence continue to improve. One of the greatest difficulties in predicting violence is caused by the infrequency of violence in the general public. The best predictor of violent behavior is past behavior. This article also discusses childhood, family, psychological, and situational factors.
