Abstract

Vinyl acetate (Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number 108-05-4) is used in the manufacturing of polyvinyl compounds, resins, glues, polymer adhesives, vinyl copolymers, plastics, and latex paints. Vinyl acetate is considered to be possibly carcinogenic to humans based on inadequate evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and limited evidence of carcinogenicity in laboratory animals. Vinyl acetate is rapidly metabolized into acetaldehyde, a chemical with sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals. In addition, vinyl acetate and its metabolite, acetaldehyde, are genotoxic in human cells in vitro and on animals in vivo.
