Abstract

[In May 1891, at the age of 25, Vincent van Gogh-a cousin of the (now) famous painter Vincent van Gogh-took over both the art gallery and the bookshop, which his father, C. M. van Gogh, had started in Amsterdam in 1841. Vincent's taste as a connoisseur was to a great extent formed by his uncle Daniel Franken, a passionate collector and important figure in the Amsterdam art world. As an art dealer Vincent introduced to the Dutch public the work of the great contemporary French artists, such as Fantin-Latour, Hervier, Meryon, Bresdin and Odilon Redon. His work as a publisher of such novelties as Theo van Hoytema's famous picture-books, and the weekly De Kroniek secured Vincent a place in the leading circles of art and literature of his time. A rich epicurian amateur, a bohemian at heart, Vincent felt more at home in Paris than in Amsterdam.
