Abstract
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Surveiller et punir (1975), Marc Rolli and Roberto Nigro have edited a German volume that deals with the power analysis developed in Foucault's historical study on the birth of the prison: Vierzig Jahre Uberwachen und Strafen. Zur Aktualitat der Foucault'schen Machtanalyse (Bielefeld: Transcript, 2017). However, this edited volume is more than the appreciation of an already sufficiently canonized piece of thinking and writing. Rather, it discusses the question of Foucault's topicality, that is, the significance of Surveiller et punir in order to better understand the power relations that shape our immediate present.
