Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We intend to show how the New Zealand White retired breeder rabbit can be used for testing materials intended for urogynecologic surgery. METHODS: Our institution was one of the first to report use of the New Zealand white retired breeder rabbit for urogynecologic research.1 During a recent research period for an IACUC approved study at our animal lab, we filmed our surgical technique. RESULTS: The video will discuss preoperative preparation of the rabbit including anesthesia and skin prep. The intraoperative portion will show surgical techniques for utilizing the rabbit abdomen and vagina for testing materials including harvesting autologous fascia and implanting various materials in the abdomen and vagina. Techniques and instruments used in surgery on this animal model will be discussed. The postoperative and recovery portion of the video will discuss techniques to optimize healing and reduce postoperative pain. CONCLUSIONS: The New Zealand White retired breeder rabbit can be used for testing materials intended for urogynecologic surgery. Recent presentations show it is an economical animal model.2 The rabbit is easy to handle, has the advantage of having the capacity to provide an abdominal and vaginal model, and tolerates surgery well. We feel that this animal model should be considered for in vivo testing of current and future biologic materials to better understand their properties and uses in human patients.
