Abstract

Linear and χ (3) spectra of vacuum-deposited thin films of polythiophene (PTh, prepared by an organometallic process) show vibronic structures with an energy difference of about 1500 cm −1 (0.19 eV). The vibronic structure is more clearly observed in the χ (3) spectrum and is considered to originate from coupling with the v c=c vibration of the thiophene ring. Large χ (3) anisotropy with a χ ∥ (3)/ χ ⊥ (3) value of about six is observed with the PTh vacuum deposited on substrates covered with a rubbed poly( p-phenylene) thin layer.
