Abstract

Rate constants are presented for (VV) energy transfer between 12C 16O(υ=1) and 15N 2(υ=1) which is near-resonant with an energy mismatch of −108.9 cm −1. Previous studies of this process in the gas phase have been extended to 45 K and measurements have also been made in liquid Ne solution at 25, 33 and 40 K. These are the first energy transfer studies to be undertaken with this solvent. The laser-induced fluorescence technique was used with a frequency-doubled CO 2 laser to excite a small proportion of the CO present to the (υ=1) state. Fluorescence from 12C 16O(υ=1) was monitored and the resultant traces analysed to yield rate constants.
