Abstract

An extract of waste malt rootlets have been added to hydrolysate medium. The hydrolysates were obtained by acid treating of wood and agricultural cellulose wastes. The extract was used at a concentration of 1.0–1.5 volume per cent for the production of SCP by fodder yeast. The performance of the cultivation processes was studied in batch, semicontinuous as well as in continuous system at pilot stage. The growth-promoting effect of the extract on the growth of Candida tropicalis, C. intermedia and C. scottii was reflected in the higher biomass yield and the increasing protein content. The chemostat productivity was found to increase by 20%.
