Abstract

SUMMARY One of the most important characteristics of a railway system is that many cars are coupled together into a long train. This has many advantages and makes possible mass transportation. However, most papers have treated dynamics of railway vehicles as if there were only a single vehicle. This paper reports a new method using “a single-car-equivalency model”, by which we can analyse the frequency response of an intermediate car in a long train to track irregularities. Using this method, this paper also shows the results of the essential difference in vertical frequency response between articulated vehicles and conventional two-bogie vehicles.
