Abstract

Summary The practical assembly processes are distributed from large-lot-small-variety to Small-lot-large-variety. How can one estimate the degree of versatility of the process and find the system to match the request? The author proposed the versatility index, which is a quantitative measure to indicate versatility of both an assembly process and an assembly system. Basically it is the number of frequency of the model changes in a year which will occur in the process, or which should be treated by the System. The versatility index of the system should match the versatility index of the process. By using this indicator one can select an optimal system.
