Abstract

Abstract In a recent publication, Smelser analysed the problems of comparative studies in die social sciences. The question occurs whether comparative analysis differs from other forms of scientific investigation. In the discussion, four aspects which are problematical in comparative studies are considered: the technical problem of control in research; the nature of the situation of research; the problem, of comparability with respect to units, variables and indicators; and the problem of establishing relationships on the basis of collected data. Smelser succeeds in relating comparativestudies to the general methodological framework of scientific investigation.
