Abstract

The study analizes four cognitive verbs (creo, imagino, pienso and supongo) in the texts of the Corpus del Nuevo diccionario historico (CDH). It focuses on the first person singular of the present indicative and the emergence of its mitigating function. This form occurs in several constructions among which the following ones are particularly relevant: 1. verb+que+clause (V+que+CL); 2. intermediate or final a lo que / como / segun+verb (Conj+V); 3. intermediate or final verb (V). The main research questions are: Which constructions occur with which verb? How do these constructions develop diachronically? The result of the research is that each verb passes two stages before it appears as parenthetical. First, the verb acquires the capability to introduce propositions. Second, the verb acquires an epistemic meaning.
