Abstract
Among the four treatment regimens studied, the polymer-coated pancrealipase appears to be the preferred treatment for pancreatic enzyme replacement in cystic fibrosis. None of the pancreatic enzyme supplements used, however, alone or with the addition of bile salts, antacid, or enteric coating, completely corrected the malabsorption of fat. The effect of higher doses of the polymer-coated pancrealipase or the addition of antacids or cimetidine therefore need to be examined for the possibility of further clinical improvement. Alternatively, mucosal absorption of fatty acids may be impaired and further improvement of pancreatic enzyme replacement may not completely abolish steatorrhea.
