Abstract
ABSTRACT A ventilation system was designed, implemented, and evaluated for the reduction of sugar losses in stored sugar beets. Design parameters for ventilation and freezing were determined and an above ground duct system was built and installed. Sugar beets in storage were cooled to near freezing temperatures by using mechanical ventilation. The beets were then frozen until processing in the spring. The ventilation system significantly reduced sugar losses in comparison to a check pile.
