Abstract

Toxic metaphors are frequent in polemical texts against heresy from the 11th and 12th centuries. These metaphors derive from ancient polemical literature. Metaphors of poison are used to counter heretics, sinners and other deviants and to maintain the unity of the Church in times of ferment.
