Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to report the rare and endangered spider species and the methods of their conservation in the Natura 2000 habitats of the Mátra Mountains, Hungary. Sampling was carried out between 2007 and 2023 at 66 sampling sites, including habitats treated and untreated by shrub control, grazing and mowing. In 45 of these habitats 9 protected and 6 rare spider species were recorded. We conclude that our results showed a high number of rare and endangered spider species, reflecting the importance of Natura 2000 habitats for spiders in the Mátra Mountains. In addition, as spider species respond differently to management and vegetation succession, landscape management need to be better coordinated to maintain habitat mosaics.
