Abstract
An experimental study was performed on the structure of a diesel spray at the initial stage of fuel injection. The nozzle tested was multi-hole valve cut orifice (VCO) nozzle. The experimental procedure consisted of illuminaiting the fuel spray by a stroboscope at an arbitrary instant and observing the image of the various sections of the fuel spray by a VTR set. Spray tip penetration and spray angle were measured under various back pressures ranging from 0.1 Mpa to 3 Mpa. The results showed that the fuel sprays were classified into solid cone, hollow and mixed type. The structures of each type of fuel sprays were clarified. The spray tip penetration of the solid cone spray and the solid cone portion in the mixed type sprays increased with time in the same way and that of the hollow cone spray showed a maximum at 0.4 ms. The spray angle of the solid cone spray increased with back pressure.
