Abstract

Highly good correlations for the extractable activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, pyruvate,Pi dikinase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, NADP-malate dehydrogenase and NADP-malic enzyme and the rate of photosynthesis were found in maize leaves of various ages. The activities of the first two enzymes were similar to, or slightly higher than, the photosynthesis rate, whereas the activities of the other enzymes were 2 to 6 times higher than the photosynthesis rate. These results suggest that pyruvate,Pi dikinase and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase may be rate-limiting factors in maize.
