Abstract

This article examines the treatment of the Basque locative suffix -tegi ‘abode, place’ (or -degi when nasal), a term that is used in the composition of Basque house names. The study area includes 23 municipalities located for the most part in the Basque province of Lower Navarre in France. The data studied come from an existing set that is based on field surveys. More precisely, the intent was to examine written forms from cadastral records, as well as oral data based on the current pronunciation. The diachronic analysis of toponyms containing the suffix -tegi indicates a reduction of this suffix into -te, when it is followed by the singular determinant -a ‘ the’, after a passage through -tei. Highlighting this very localized phenomenon allows on the one hand to enhance the toponymic data within Basque linguistics, and also offers a new consideration of the standardization of toponyms emanating from dialects.
