Abstract

A study was made of the effect of adding a bifunctional antioxidant bis-[3-methyl 5-(1-methylenecyclohexyl)-6-oxyphenyl] methane (NONOKS WSP) and conditions of radiation on molecular and supermolecular characteristics of polychloroprene of different degrees of conversion (65 and 98%). It was found that the efficiency of the antioxidant increases when added in two stages (at the beginning and at the end of emulsion polymerization). It is assumed that this is achieved by uniform distribution of the antioxidant in the polymer. The optimum concentration of the antioxidant is 1·75 and 2·0%, respectively for samples of 65 and 98% conversion. It was shown that photodegradation mainly takes place in amorphous polymer sections. In a nitrogen atmosphere photo-oxidation slows down.
