Abstract

The expression for the total energy loss suffered by a particle bunch travelling at a constant speed along the axis of a smooth circular periodic waveguide is calculated by the perturbation method. A physical explanation of the loss mechanism is given. The influence of the bunch parameters, namely charge, shape and width, and of the waveguide geometry is exhibited by numerical examples.
